My Poetry

Writing poetry presents the biggest artistic challenge for me. I try not to be so personal that the poem gets lost in my own experience and readers fail to connect with what I try to convey.  I try to illustrate the simple, but meaningful things that touch our lives. I choose things moments that I find have profound complexity in their simplicity; things that are easily overlooked or forgotten.  Moments that can trigger a flood of memories.

My poems develop over time, in some cases years.  I may never be comfortable with how they read or feel but are a few that I think have reached a stage of completion that, for the moment, illustrate a sensitive point in time.

There are numerous poets that I admire. If I were to name any that I think influence my work, I would have to include William Carlos Williams, Mary Oliver and Li-Young Lee. I suppose it's the earthiness and the closeness of family in the work of these poets that appeals to me.

If you like any of my poems and want a copy, send me an email with your mailing address and I will send you a signed copy printed on parchment at no charge.  Please do not copy or otherwise use them without my permission.
